Should you test for food sensitivities? What’s at the ROOT?

And now you’re down to eating a handful of boring foods and still didn’t get to the ROOT of the sensitivity…AAAHHHH!!

Food sensitivity testing was actually a big part of my integrative health education. And up until a few years ago, it was something I frequently incorporated into my practice. Until I realized that all of these other variables took precedence:

  • Mold
  • Heavy metals
  • Glyphosate
  • Environmental toxins
  • Parasites
  • Dental infections
  • Stress
  • Birth control and other medications

All of the above (and others) are most likely truly at the ROOT of your health challenges!!

Here’s where food sensitivities actually begin

When these factors (listed above) essentially contribute to a permeable gut (Leaky Gut), food particles make their way through the gut wall into the bloodstream. This triggers an immune response, and this is where food sensitivities begin.

Side Note: Yes, there absolutely are plenty of cases where people can begin to remove some of these trigger foods and notice a positive shift in symptoms!

However, regardless of whether or not we see an improvement in symptoms from removal alone, if we never dive deeper into the variables that are causing that permeability, you are going to just keep eating your limited amount of “approved foods.” Not only can that get incredibly boring, but it can affect the diversity of our gut microbiome and we miss out on the variety of places that we can get our key nutrients.

AND REMEMBER – These same factors that are causing the gut permeability are wreaking havoc on other areas of the body and will eventually start to manifest as other symptoms.

Food sensitivities are not the ULTIMATE root cause.

If you’re interested in knowing your “current sensitivities” and choose to run a test, go for it! I’ve done them in the past out of curiosity. BUT just be sure not to look at the results as the end-all-be-all. Keep on digging!
